Cameras Don’t Lie. Reviews Sometimes Do…

Why security cameras matter more than you think

Most people think security cameras are there to protect inventory and cash. Yeah, that matters. Nobody wants stuff walking out the door. After running iTech Gurus for several years, I’ve realized something way more important. The biggest thing our cameras protect is our team.

We recently got a one star review that said “Horrible service, don’t waste your time here.” That’s it. No details. No explanation. Just a hit. Because the person used their real name, I was able to go back and find the interaction on our cameras with full audio and video. So I sat down and watched the entire thing from start to finish.

What I found was not bad service. It was actually the opposite. My team handled it exactly how they should have. They were patient, they explained things clearly, and they stayed professional the entire time. The issue was simple. The customer wasn’t listening or didn’t want to. They came in already convinced they knew better than us, and nothing we said was going to change that.

Without cameras, I would’ve been left guessing. Did my employee mess something up? Did we explain it wrong? Did we miss something? That’s where a lot of business owners live, in that gray area of not really knowing. And when you don’t know, it’s easy to start questioning your team or worse, holding them accountable for something they didn’t do.

That’s how you lose good people.

Nothing kills morale faster than a team member doing everything right and still feeling like they’re in trouble because of a one sided story. When you have cameras, you remove the guesswork. You don’t rely on opinions or emotions. You go back and look at what actually happened.

And sometimes, what actually happened tells a very different story than what was written in a review.

Most businesses think about cameras as a way to protect physical assets. Watch the cash, watch the inventory, watch the doors. But your people are the ones interacting with customers every single day. They are your brand in real time. The way they communicate, the way they handle problems, the way they carry themselves, that’s what customers remember.

One bad review can do more damage than someone stealing something off a shelf. If you don’t have a way to verify what actually happened, you’re stuck reacting instead of leading.

This is not about micromanaging. I’m not sitting there watching footage all day trying to catch someone doing something wrong. That’s not how we run things. People get frustrated. It gets busy. Things don’t always go perfectly. That’s real life. I don’t care if someone vents or has a moment. What I care about is how we handle customers and how we represent ourselves as a business.

But when something comes up, especially something that questions the integrity or professionalism of my team, I’m going to look into it. And when I do, I want facts, not guesses.

There are also times I go back and watch footage and see things I don’t love. Not wrong, not something someone should get in trouble for, just something that could be better. Maybe we rushed an explanation. Maybe we assumed the customer understood something they didn’t. Maybe we missed an opportunity to slow down and educate.

That’s where cameras become a coaching tool.

It gives us real situations to learn from, not made up scenarios or generic training. We can say, here’s exactly what happened, here’s what we did well, and here’s how we can be even better next time. That’s how you improve without beating people down.

At the end of the day, security cameras are not just about theft. They protect your team from false claims. They give you clarity when things don’t add up. They help you coach and develop your people. They allow you to lead based on facts instead of assumptions.

At iTech Gurus, I trust my team. They care, they show up, and they do things the right way. And when something gets questioned, We don’t jump to conclusions. we go find the truth.

Because the most important thing we protect is not what’s on the shelves. It’s the people behind the counter.
